Elsie Beatrice “Sally” Shrigley (1899–1978)

Co-founder of The Vegan Society in 1944 alongside Donald Watson and others; long-serving committee member who also served as an officer, including a period as president in the early 1960s. Often referred to as “Sally.”

Some histories credit Shrigley—alongside Watson—with coining or popularising “vegan,” while the Hendersons’ “Allvega/Allvegan” suggestion is also recorded in Society history; include both to reflect the record.

Honorary secretary roles in local vegetarian groups (Croydon, Surrey, London); decades of Society service.

Her written work.
